During nu metal's first big wave, DJs interrupted guitar parts, brought in horror-film sounds and helped songs move between sections. The turntables were part of the writing.
The DJ was a band member
Sid Wilson, DJ Lethal and Joe Hahn each developed a recognisable approach because their bands left room for it. Their scratches and samples change the rhythm, colour and space around a riff.
