Bring Me The Horizon released Sempiternal on 1 April 2013 through RCA. Terry Date produced the album, and the sessions brought programmer and keyboardist Jordan Fish into the writing process before he became a full member.

Start With Shadow Moses

Shadow Moses gives you the choir, Lee Malia's central riff and Oli Sykes' melodic chorus in one song. Every part makes the next one hit harder. On Sleepwalking and Can You Feel My Heart, the electronics carry the emotion as much as the guitars do.

How The Songs Join Up

Ambience, loops and processed vocals connect the sections. The breakdowns still hit, but there's more happening around them. You can hear how much this approach influenced the decade of heavy music that followed.

The Part That's Harder To Copy

The synth swells and huge choruses were widely copied. What makes Sempiternal hold up is how naturally its immediate hooks sit beside the stranger ideas. Bring Me The Horizon kept exploring that freedom on later records.
